It’s the time of year where we set goals that will inspire us for the year ahead. At Huddle, we are making exciting plans for 2021, including our ESG goals. How are we going to make a difference in the world this year?
One of our goals for 2021 is to help solve energy poverty in the Dominican Republic. Read on to find out how you can be part of our exciting plan!
What’s the plan?
The team at Huddle are making exciting plans with our partners at Solar Buddy to tackle the devastating issue of energy poverty in the Dominican Republic this year. Our goal is to work with our clients to assemble and deliver 20,000 solar lights to children in energy poverty, so that they can study and complete everyday tasks after the sun goes down. Something most of us take for granted.
How can one light make a difference?
This little solar light, assembled by you, will make a BIG difference to children and their families living in energy poverty. Here is what you can achieve with one light:
-
Positively impacts five lives;
-
Education: Allows students to study 78% longer using safe and reliable lighting, improving their educational outcomes;
-
Health: Reduces exposure to toxic and dangerous fumes which has the potential to increase overall health of women and children by up to 60%;
-
Economic: Reduces a family’s average weekly expenditure on kerosene by 80%, improving the family’s financial security and safety;
-
Environment: Offsets 1.28 tons of CO2 over 10 years which is the equivalent to growing 21.3 tree seedlings over the same period;
What is energy poverty?
Each night, more than 800 million people are plunged into complete darkness because they don’t have access to clean energy. They depend on fuel-based energy like charcoal, firewood, and kerosene to complete basic tasks including cooking and reading after dusk. These forms of energy have a devastating impact on the health and well-being, economic stability, educational outcomes, and the environment they live in.
