Triple Bottom Line: how profit, people and planet come together to spell and new paradigm for measuring success

June 14, 2021

More organizations than ever more are talking about sustainability as one of their business goals. Having sustainability as a goal is great. But measuring it and attempting to really incorporate sustainability in your business practices can be a lot more difficult. One way of helping with this problem of measurement and paradigm is the ‘Triple Bottom Line’, or ‘TBL’.

The Triple Bottom Line: People, Planet, Profit.

What is it?

TBL is a framework that brings together different aspects of an organization’s performance and elevates sustainability to a core business goal. Instead of the traditional approach that puts all the emphasis on cash profit, TBL expands your frame of reference to include environmental and social outcomes to assess business success.

For example…

If you were holding a national sales event, a TBL approach to measuring return on investment would account for not only how many leads were generated and sales converted, but perhaps how much energy was used and how the activities impacted employee welfare and retention. This gives a picture of how you are doing on all three of your bottom-line goals.

How can I get started/call to action?

The first step to incorporating this powerful tool in your thinking and management is deciding what you are measuring and how. What are your key outcomes? Many of our clients are concerned with energy use, landfill waste, mental health, charitable contributions or employee retention.  Every organization is different and will select different priorities based on their business and core values.

How Huddle can make this easy

Our mission at Huddle is to make it easy for companies to use the TBL approach to measure the success of their meetings, events and brand experiences. We will work with you to clarify your goals, create a baseline measurement and set meaningful benchmarks to aim for along the way. Our user-friendly dashboard will help you track your progress so you always know where you are up to can and can share your successes with your employees, shareholders and customers.
