Welcome to the Huddle team’s roundup of destination and event venue sourcing info. We aim to help keep our clients and partners informed about what is happening in the dynamic global venue space. This time we look at booming hotel construction in North America giving more diverse venue choices than ever before. New luxury offerings in the Caribbean for incentive and luxury events, and the continuing rise of extended stay properties and which states are making the most progress towards sustainable event venues.
U.S. Hotel Construction Hits Record High
According to data from Lodging Econometrics, the United States has reached an all-time high in hotel construction. With a whopping 5,964 projects underway, totalling nearly 694,000 rooms, this surge underscores a remarkable growth trajectory. Of particular interest is the surge in upper midscale and upscale properties, reflecting a trend towards restoring and rebranding existing or heritage hotels.
Looking ahead, projections are optimistic, especially with expected interest rate cuts, which are poised to fuel further development and renovations in the hospitality sector. So we can all look forward to having more amazing event locations to choose from in the U.S than ever before.
Extended-Stay Properties Continue to Thrive
Extended-stay accommodations are increasingly popular, catering to the needs of long-stay guests wishing to stay 20 nights or more. Hilton recently unveiled its newest offering, LivSmart Studios by Hilton, with the first location to open in Indiana this year. Similar initiatives have been recently announced by Marriott and Hyatt, indicating a broad trend in the lodging industry towards extended stays.
While 20 days might be a bit much of an extension after a conference, the proliferation of extended stay options gives event professionals and event organizers exciting choices, no matter what types of events they are thinking of. Amidst evolving travel dynamics, extended-stay brands have demonstrated remarkable resilience, offering comfort, convenience and flexibility.
New Luxury Resorts in the Caribbean
The Caribbean is always a favourite for the events industry. Close to North America, offering amazing event experiences and incredible natural landscapes. So we are excited to see the regional product offering expanding to include new luxury resorts perfect for high-end meetings and events or incentive trips.
First, let’s look at the Fort George Hotel & Spa in Belize City. Boasting 98 rooms blending colonial charm with modern elegance, this luxury retreat promises an unforgettable stay. Positioned as the city’s premier luxury hotel, Fort George Hotel & Spa beckons travelers to explore Belize’s rich culture and natural wonders.
From nearby artisan markets to ancient Mayan ruins, guests are treated to immersive experiences and food and beverage options. With versatile event spaces and breathtaking vistas, it’s an ideal venue for intimate gatherings and corporate events.
Meanwhile, Marriott Bonvoy is expanding its footprint in the Caribbean with Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Turks & Caicos. Scheduled to open in 2025, this property offers 100 guest rooms and suites, along with a plethora of adventurous activities amidst the stunning island backdrop. From scuba diving to seasonal whale watching, guests can indulge in unparalleled luxury amidst nature’s splendor.
We are also pleased to see some great sustainability initiatives continuing to spread throughout the market. Fort George Hotel & Spa curates bespoke adventures, including helicopter tours and wildlife expeditions, while promoting local sustainability initiatives. Similarly, Salterra in South Caicos invites guests to participate in coral cultivation and protection efforts, fostering a deeper connection with the pristine marine ecosystem.
