hello,

Top tips for a green Halloween

Halloween is upon us, and as the Huddle team stock up on candy corn and get our costumes ready we thought we would share some of our ideas for how you can make a great Halloween just a little greener and more sustainable.

We love a scary Halloween, especially when it doesn’t have a frightening environmental impact. But how do you make a green Halloween party? Check out our top tips for a more sustainable Halloween and help your holiday tread a little more lightly on the earth this year.

Reusable Party Supplies

One simple eco-friendly move you can make is to avoid disposable cutlery, cups, and plates wherever possible. When washable utensils and dishes are not practical, we like to use some of the fantastic biodegradable options now available on the market.

Green Treats

While trick-or-treating is always going to be a plastic-heavy activity, choosing sweets with minimal packaging can help a lot. Many metro areas now also have vendors offering candy with recycled packaging, which is an amazing option, and buying locally is always a clever way to lower environmental impact.

Take your Tote

We see some great trick-or-treating bags each year, but our favorites are spooky reusable tote bags. If you don’t have one, spice up your existing bag game with some scary stickers for a more sustainable Halloween.

Think Local

The temptation to go to the area with the good candy and the best Halloween decorations can be real. But walking around your neighborhood instead of driving to a destination is another simple green Halloween idea. Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint, but it can be a great way to get to know your neighbors and your local community better.

Vintage Advantage

Everyone loves a new costume, but all those mass-produced synthetic fibres can be a bit tough on the environment. So why not go thrifting to find your next costume? You might even find something you can wear after the spooky season is over. Matching that with part of your existing wardrobe, or even some DIY elements, can make your look unique and environmentally friendly.

Use Those Pumpkins

Jack-O-Lanterns are as important as Halloween candy to making the holiday feel just right, but all that pumpkin can easily go to waste. Every year, millions of tons of pumpkin-insides are dumped into the trash, which is a shame because all that goodness could go into making delicious soups, pastas, and biscuits. Check out this guide from Eatly Magazine on how to use the whole pumpkin if you want some great cooking ideas.

So whether you are pumpkin carving with the family, choosing party favors for your friends or going to Halloween drinks with your co-workers, we hope you will consider some of these small decisions that can make your holiday not just more fun, but easier on the earth.
